Electric utility boxes

Estarreja, Portugal
Curated by Lara Seixo Rodrigues

For the fist edition of this new urban art festival in Portugal, I was invited to paint a few electric utility boxes in Estarreja city centre. These paintings reveal re-invented patterns found around the town, once again with the purpose of transforming a dull urban element into a vibrant and historically interesting object.

I painted a series of seven large electric utility boxes in downtown Gainesville for the 352walls project. All of these art interventions are part of the “Electrical Animals” series, which I created specifically for this location. They were based on blending my reinterpretative approach to Portuguese azulejos and examples of Florida's curious fauna. Each painting was thus a small tribute to one of the many animals found in the Sunshine State.

Electric utility boxes are often a dull and intrusive element in the urban environment. My thought process here was how to turn this everyday object into something interesting. Following my ongoing approach of exploring the relationship between culture, heritage, and modernity, I began playing with the idea of creating an aesthetics that would symbolically reveal some of the history that lies dormant beneath our cities.
